Shisham Wooden Okhali, Mortars & Pestles 5*5 Inch

Some kitchen tools earn their place through sheer usefulness, and the okhali is one of them. Turned from solid shisham, the Indian rosewood prized for its density and deep chocolate grain, this 5 x 5 inch mortar and pestle set brings a piece of the traditional Indian kitchen back to your counter.

Shisham is closed-grained and naturally hard-wearing, which makes it well suited to pounding. It absorbs the impact of the pestle without splintering, does not carry flavours from one spice to the next the way softer woods can, and darkens beautifully with years of use. Each piece is hand-turned and finished smooth, so the grain pattern and tone vary slightly from set to set.

The 5 inch bowl is a practical everyday size. It holds enough for a fresh batch of ginger garlic paste, a pinch of crushed peppercorns for dal, coarsely bruised cardamom for chai, or herbs for a chutney. Hand pounding does something a mixer cannot: it bruises and releases the essential oils in whole spices rather than heating and shearing them, which is why crushed jeera or elaichi from an okhali smells so much stronger.

It also works well for dry fruits, medicinal herbs, rock salt and small grinding jobs where pulling out the mixie feels like overkill. Left out on the counter, it doubles as a warm, rustic accent beside your masala box.

Care is simple. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, avoid soaking or dishwashing, dry fully after each use, and rub in a little food-grade oil occasionally to keep the wood nourished.
